Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales, Madrid

#15 of 93 in Museums in Madrid
A working royal monastery set in the former palace of King Charles I and Isabel of Portugal, Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales was founded by the royal couple’s daughter in 1559. Luxuriously decorated and filled with high-value objects, the monastery can only be seen via a guided tour. This grandeur was funded by the dowries of the widow and spinster noblewomen that came to the convent in the 16th and 17th centuries. Admire the masterpiece paintings, huge tapestries, ornate alters, grand sculptures, and significant religious relics. Book in advance as tours have limited capacity. • Beautiful interiors, tapestries, paintings, we were interested even without knowledge of the language, the history of the monastery revered before the trip. Tickets were taken in advance on the site, it is a pity that there is not specified immediately, in what language will be the tour. You can't take pictures, but you didn't always follow strictly.

  • a jewel, full of rooms, paintings, tapestries, chapels, difficult to find so many things in so little space. The tours are in various languages, but with only about 20 people. Better to arrive before it opens (10) to make sure you don't wait too long (or find everything already taken for the day)

  • The art and tapestries here were extraordinary. The sheer amount of Renaissance art here is unbelievable. Even though the hours and tour are limited, I would recommend this place if you are in Madrid.
  • They only provide guided tours in French and Spanish but no English. The place is worth visiting but we learn just a little because of the language barrier. It was a pity.
