Most of the shops in this barranco sell the same tourist tat. The textiles sold here are made in the premises by the owner. A local rug is aristic; colourful; relatively cheap and makes a good... more »

As well as the gorgeous hand-woven rugs, there are other things on sale made by local craftsmen and women. Jams, liqueurs (I think), mountain herbs to make tea... We bought some modern dishes, easily.... more »

So many great things about this shop! First of all, Ana, the owner of the shop, is so kind and talented. She has a passion for her craft, and you can tell she puts her heart into every piece she creates. She is also such a nice person and very welcoming and friendly. I took a class with her and her associate Paky, and I learned how to make a rug on the loom, which was really interesting and fun. Both Ana and Paky were very encouraging and patient instructors. They explained things so clearly that, even with my imperfect Spanish, I was able to understand everything. Hey also treated me to some traditional local wine from the shop. I also bought a wide variety of Ana’s rugs, which are all made in the traditional way, to give as gifts. Once my family saw the pictures, everyone wanted one, so I ended up with quite a big pile. I got everything from little bathroom rugs to big area rugs, plus a woven wall hanging and other gifts, and she shipped them directly to my house for a minimal cost, so I wouldn’t have to try to take them on the buses back home. Ana also connected me with the lady who runs the Alpujarra museum in town, and I went down and took a guided tour through the museum. She also had recommendations for other things to do/see/eat in and around Bubión. I highly recommend this shop if you’re looking for authentic, hand-made gifts (for yourself or others) from La Alpujarra. I also recommend taking a class to learn how to make your own rug; it’s such an enjoyable craft to try, and you walk away with a unique keepsake. And if you have questions about other things to do in the area, Ana is a great person to talk to for ideas.

Ana keeps alive the Alpujarran artesan craft of weaving a variety of mats, curtains etc in her wonderful shop/workshop. You can browse her shop, watch her at work with her loom - she's super friendly so don't be shy about asking advice about your purchase! She can even arrange shipping. If you're visiting Bubion you must pop into Ana's shop!
