Take in the local culture by meandering through the throngs of people going about their daily business at La Boqueria, arguably the country’s best-known market. Noted for selling a wide range of local products, including fish, meat, vegetables, and fruit, the market has been open since 1836. It’s worth a visit just for the colors, smells, and sights of the fresh foodstuffs displayed and sold here. Friendly vendors can tell you exactly where and how their goods were grown, raised, or harvested. Avoid driving and arrive as early as possible to miss the crowds. If you can allow time, take a seat at one of the cafes and spend a few moments observing other travelers as they search for a little bit of something Spanish to take home with them. A must see if you are a tourist. The fresh fish area is amazing. The displays of fresh fruits are mouth watering. Take your camera because it will be hard to describe how magnificent the displays are placed without a picture to help. My husband loved being call "Rey" by the vendors. Your senses will be overwhelmed with freshness.

Visiting a local fresh food market gives a very interesting perspective about the city. I have been to six cities in Spain and i still can get over the fact that Boqueria is the best of the lot. Far better than San Miguel of Madrid. And Boqueria caters to everything. Its huge. The chocolates, cheese, fruits and vegetables are not ignored. There are plenty of shops for these as well.
