  • In This bastion defended the city the General Rafael Menacho and died because of a cannon on March 4, 1811. The French cannons were at the beginning of the Avda of Peru and you can see some impacts on the outside corner of the two main canvases (see photo). His death meant the beginning of the surrender of the city on March 10th and as recognition of its value and that of the defenders of the city, the French troops surrendered honors and allowed the defenders to go out through the breach of the wall parading into a swinging drum. The city was reconquered almost a year later, on April 6, 1812, by Allied troops, drunk English soldiers looted the city, killed many citizens and raped many women. The disorder lasted 3 days.
