Trip Planner: Europe / Portugal / Central Portugal / Lisbon District / Lisbon / Padrao dos Descobrimentos
Celebrate Portugal's rich history of exploration at Padrao dos Descobrimentos, which was built to commemorate Prince Henry the Navigator and the Age of Discovery during the 15th and 16th centuries. Architect José Angelo Cottinelli Telmo and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida created the original statue for the 1940 Portuguese World Fair. It was later destroyed but then rebuilt in 1958 by the government. Note the monument's square with its marble compass rose, which was a gift from South Africa. Padrao dos Descobrimentos Reviews
Quite a nice monument to see, especially at dusk under the golden glow of the sun, when the stonework gleams. It’s not a monument that leaves you in complete awe, but worth a watch if you’re in the ar... more »
Massief monument uit de tijd van Salazar, aan de Taag, vlakbij het Mosteiro dos Jeronimos. Daarna kan je te voet naar de toren van Belem. more »Solid monument from the time of Salazar, on the Tagus, near the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos. Then you can walk to the tower of Belem.
Awesome monument for the discoverers of the maritime Portuguese routes. Very well maintained, it was exceptionally clean (see photos attached). It includes a ton of detail, if you get really close to it and look for them. One of my favorite things to do in Belém. The view from the water to the monument must be amazing, didn't get the chance to do it but would gladly come back to try it!
A landmark widely visible, yet the strange mix of modern materials & styles with the old theme & artwork kept me from truly connecting with it. The surrounding area is also a strange mixture of a yacht port, industry, parks etc. Worth a visit if you are nearby, but I wouldn't come out here from Lisbon's center just for this monument.
