A commemorative arch dedicated to recovery from the 1775 earthquake, Arco do Triunfo boasts 7 m (23 ft) statues at its top, representing glory, valor, and ingenuity. Originally a bell tower, this neoclassical structure took over a century to become what it is today. Standing over 30 m (100 ft), it welcomes you to the historical area of Lisbon. Look for statues of Vasco da Gama, Nuno Alvares Pereira, Viriato, and Marquis of Pombal at its lower level. Climb the arch's gazebo to get panoramic views of Rua Augusta. This is such a stunning gateway to the main plaza, Praca do Commercio. It is best seen by walking down Rua Augusta. The enormous white archway looms majestically in the distance then, as you go... more »
Arco da Rua Augusta in Lisbon, regardless of the time you visit it, is absolutely splendid. The quiet evening was accompanied by ambient music that kept you in the middle of a dreamy atmosphere, in a completely unique landscape. The morning was sunny, the state shining in the warm rays of the sun. The police provide security by being permanently in the area. There are many bars and places where you can eat or just enjoy a fresh orange. I will return to this place when I arrive in Lisbon. I recommend with confidence!
Splendid! The Rua Augusta Arch is a stone, triumphal arch-like, historical building and visitor attraction in Lisbon, Portugal, on the Praça do Comércio. It was built to commemorate the city's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake.
