Rizal Shrine, Manila

4.3
#2 of 19 in Museums in Manila
Inside the fortifications of Fort Santiago, see Rizal Shrine, the site of the incarceration and death of Philippine national hero José Rizal, and today a museum offering guided tours. Wax dolls, memorabilia, artifacts, books, manuscripts, and other personal belongings tell the life story of José Rizal, a doctor and the leader of the national movement, who was executed by the Spanish colonial government. The most memorable exhibits include a copy of his last song, "Mi Ultimo Adios," and the first draft of the novel "Noli Me Tangere." After the tour, take a walk through the park, which features fountains and plenty of lush vegetation. • I learned facts here that I’ve never learned from my history/Rizal class back in school. Or maybe I haven’t read that much. Well, it’s never too late to learn.
  • A symbolic place for Filipinos I gave 5 stars because in my opinion this small museum deserves a visit to learn about the life of the works and the death of the most famous national hero of the Philippines. In 1896 he was killed by Spanish colonizers because he was accused of conspiracy to found the "League of the Philippines" youth movement, which spread freedom of thought and autonomy. 120 years after his death, these days are the celebrations to commemorate him. The most symbolic place linked to José Rizal, is located in Intramuros in the "Rizal Shrine", where I visited his last prison before the shooting. Filipinos come here as a pilgrimage.
