Walk through an eclectic passage of history at Museum of Legends and Traditions (Museo de Tradiciones y Leyendas), formerly the infamous XXI jail where many prisoners were brutally tortured between 1921 to 1979. A varied display is now featured here, from life size papier-mâché figures of Leonese history and folklore, to colorful murals shocking you with graphic depictions of the Guardia Nacional's torturing methods on their prisoners. Knowledgeable guides will talk you through the tales of the golden crocodile, La Gigantona and the chariot of death, accompanied by an eerie backdrop of papier-mâché figures and dimly lit displays. Information is written in both Spanish and English. Tour was Traditions of Nicaragua, booked through Holland America. We had a very good guide who explained the history and current circumstances of his country. It is a very impoverished place. Even..... more »

The place is amazing. Such horror and historical depth. I wanted to know about the places history, who had been imprisoned, why, their stories, what had happened to the survivors. I wanted to know about life in the place. The torture. You will learn none of this. Instead you'll see a bizarre display of irrelevant dolls about local myths and legends. I got a guided tour. They knew nothing relevant about the place. Enjoy.

The enthusiasm and professionalism of our two young guides was inspirational. They brought to life the tired exhibits, most of which are decrepit and in dire need of restoration. Well worth the time to visit, especially the opportunity to learn about the local folklore and myths.
