Considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering, Colosseum is the largest amphitheater in the world. This world-famous Roman landmark is one of the city's most visited attractions, so expect a long line and an even longer wait. Skip the long line for the general entry by joining a guided tour of the site or by booking your tickets online. Built of concrete and stone, the elliptical amphitheater was originally capable of seating some 50,000 spectators who came to watch animal fights and gladiatorial combats. Emperor Vespasian began the amphitheater project in 70 CE. It was completed during the reign of Titus about ten years later, measuring 48 m (157 ft) high, 188 m (617 ft) long, and 156 m (511 ft) wide. I recommend buying the ticket online because at the time the queue is immense and ends up wasting much more time than planned. From there we took a bus with City tour tour to meet other sights of the city and made up for a lot!
Amazing! I would advise booking tickets online. If you have no knowledge of history I would book a guided tour. Arrive there early so as to avoid the crowds. We were there in October, early, and altho... more »
Oh, the Colosseum... what a masterpiece. If you appreciate old-world history, you will be amazed by this location. It’s impossible not to be charmed by the beauty of it. Although you can visit this monument from the outside and that may be fine, I recommend to also tour the inside. General admission costs 12€ and grants access to the Colosseum and the Roman City. If you buy the upgraded tickets for 22€ you can also visit the basement and the 3rd level of the Colosseum but you must be accompanied by a professional tour guide. I feel like this decision is geared by money which is a little disappointing. I tried purchasing one of these tickets but unfortunately there was none left for the day I was there. I feel like I missed out on the opportunity to fully embrace the experience of the Colosseum. By the way... you can order tickets in advance online for a 4€ fee. It may be worth it as lines can be pretty long and there’s no shade so you may burn up! Beware the tickets bought online are for specific times and you may be refused access if you’re late.
Most impressive sight. Steeped in history. This is the kind of historical site you need to have a guide to bring you around. There is so much detail to be revealed that you could miss important facts if you try to check it out yourself. Fantastic engineering and architecture went into building the Colosseum. Enjoy your visit.
