Camposanto, Pisa

#4 of 51 in Historic Sites in Pisa
Cemetery · Hidden Gem · Historic Site
Some say the beautiful walled cemetery of Camposanto was built around a shipload of holy soil brought from Golgotha in the 12th century. The cemetery’s main feature is a vast rectangular Gothic cloister lined by arches. While most of the cemetery’s frescoes were destroyed in World War II, view the two remaining, as well as detailed sketches of the original works of art. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Pisa holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Camposanto and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Just forget it used to be a graveyard, and just focus on the great wall paintings. You could spend quite a while admiring all the details (at least for the ones that are not damaged).  more »
  • Camposanto – gothic cemetery with beautiful frescos from XIII century; one of a kind experience. I have never seen a cemetery that is built in the way this one was, it’s an architectural magnum opus.  more »
  • This was much more open than the main area of the piazza. It was very interesting to see. Purchase the ticket to get into all of the areas around the compound, not just the tower.
  • Such a fantastic piece of architecture and the walls are spectacular! Highly recommended visiting this place if you are in Pisa.
