Pozzo di San Patrizio is an architectural feat that plunges 53.15 m (174.4 ft) into the ground. A set of 248 steps goes into the vertical drop with windows that open into the central well shaft. Look for the Latin inscription on the well, which translates as, "What nature stinted for provision, application has supplied." The well was created to provide water to Rome in the event of a siege. Pope Clement VII commissioned it when he took refuge in Orvieto after the fall of Rome in 1527. Pozzo di San Patrizio is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , international travel planner Edition.

Interesting site but remember that you need to walk down and up several steps Good having a bar outside the attraction as when you come out you need a drink unless you opt to take some water with you.... more »

This double helix resembling DNA is a marvelous creation of human beings. We went two days in a row. Thinking about building a structure like this many centuries ago is a good mind exercise. more »

Such an amazing piece of engineering. The double helix staircase certainly throws you a little when you first go in. We went early in the morning when it is quiet, which meant for a more personal visit. However this would be great for a mid afternoon adventure as it's cool underground and thus a good away to escape the heat on hotter days. We paid 5€ each to get in which was a bargain.

Cool place to visit. The "Pozzo do San Patrizio" is about 160 feet deep, with a very interesting double helix architecture, which allow to go down to the bottom of the well and than get out by going in just one direction. The ticket cost 4.5 Euros, and the visit takes 30-45 minutes.
