Sassi di Matera, Matera

4.8
Witness some of the first human settlements known in Italy at Sassi di Matera. Making up the ancient village of Matera, the series of prehistoric, cavern-carved stone structures seem similar to Jerusalem or Cappadocia. Take a tour of an ancient cave house, or visit one of the town's seven Benedictine settlements. The 16th-century Rocky Church of the Holy Spirit sits atop the highest point in the town. You can walk the limestone cliffs surrounding the village for a view of the stone city, which is a World Heritage Site. You'll also see many of the sites used in Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion of the Christ." See Sassi di Matera and all Matera has to offer by arranging your trip with our Matera sightseeing planner.

  • Lovely place. Many casine and many alleys to go. It looks like a crib! In Many caves you can find very characteristic shops, bars and restaurants. A nice sightseeing tour.

  • After leaving the sea we headed to Matera. This city unknown to most people until a few years ago has now jumped to the center of World attention as declared European Capital of culture of 2019. The city of Matera declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993. The Sassi are two quarters of the city, the Sasso Caveoso and the Sasso Barisano. They are natural caves then excavated by man and modified and become afterwards of the humble dwellings, where the local population inhabited until the years 50. Walking through these ancient dwellings made us realize how difficult life was for the people who lived here. To visit the Church of Santa Maria de Idris, and the Church of St. Peter Barisano. Matera is one of those places you need to visit. And really bellisssima.

  • I like the statement about this fabulous town:‘it is not a place to visit, but to understand‘. Stroll through the tiny streets in the evening hours and breath the past. Tourist office is Open until very Late (luckily) and is very helpful.
  • I have never seen such a place that captures the past and the present in the same moment ! How this place is not a national treasure is beyond my understanding. Sassi di Matera is worth the drive from anywhere in southern Italy. Absolutely breathtaking !!!
