Sassi di Matera, Matera

4.8
Witness some of the first human settlements known in Italy at Sassi di Matera. Making up the ancient village of Matera, the series of prehistoric, cavern-carved stone structures seem similar to Jerusalem or Cappadocia. Take a tour of an ancient cave house, or visit one of the town's seven Benedictine settlements. The 16th-century Rocky Church of the Holy Spirit sits atop the highest point in the town. You can walk the limestone cliffs surrounding the village for a view of the stone city, which is a World Heritage Site. You'll also see many of the sites used in Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion of the Christ." See Sassi di Matera and all Matera has to offer by arranging your trip with our Matera sightseeing planner.

  • A special place, almost surreal. The colors, tone on tone, buildings and streets are interrupted by the tiled roofs or other wooden elements that make the show seen from above almost finished. It looks like a crib that gives back to those who observe it strong emotions and reference, perhaps thanks to the period, to Christmas and to a gigantic crib. The Materans have proven to be wonderful and welcoming people who make you feel at home, although sometimes the prices are a bit too high in relation to the products provided, but you put it into account if you want to eat in one of the places declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Very different than most places you'll see. The ancient village is large and captures the imagination. Went here as a day trip to cut a trip in two. Stayed four hours and realized could have easily stayed for two days. It's If you were so inclined, you could take a picture every five seconds. Best tip, wear adherent shoes. The ancient stones are very smooth and there are many stairways that you will need to navigate.
  • Amazing historical attraction. Lots to see with very good information stops around the town. Even in the full heat of the day, the are cool shaded places to stop and learn about the fascinating history of life in the town way beyond the history books
