Orto Botanico di Lucca, Lucca

3.6
#6 of 93 in Parks in Province of Lucca
Garden · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
When the city gets too noisy, head to Orto Botanico di Lucca and rest among the lush plants and quiet scenery. Established by the Duchess of Parma, Marie Louise, in 1820, the botanical gardens contain an extensive collection of plant species. Start by exploring the arboretum and pond (keep your eye out for the resident fish). When you're finished, move on to the second section to view the greenhouse, botanical schools, and laboratories. If you have time, stop at the botanical museum, Cesare Bicchi, to see the herbarium and archive. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Lucca holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Orto Botanico di Lucca and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • An old and not very large botanical garden (I think it was built in 1820). In summer it is a good oasis after the city tours. There were not many people during my visit and it was almost empty.  more »
  • Provides a cool, soothing respite from the town. Well-cared for grounds and a nice selection of plantings and flowers. Affordable ticket price. Definitely worth a visit.  more »

  • What a delightful experience. Buy a ticket for just €5.00 and leave your wife there for an hour or so on her birthday. She will be safe as it's full of mostly middle aged tourists from the United Kingdom, all of whom are awfully polite. You can walk the city walls and enjoy not having to fake interest in all things botanical.
  • Small and modest, but nice botanic garden which in very harmonic way complement the overall picture of Lucca. It really can't and probably shouldn't be compared with the botanic gardens like in Berlin or Moscow - the scale is completely different. It is possible to buy combo ticket which includes admission of garden itself and two towers in the city for the 9 eur per person.
