Abbazia di San Galgano is perhaps best known for the legend of the sword in the stone, said to have been thrust into a rock near Siena by a medieval knight. The sword, of which only the hilt is visible, is preserved at a small, rounded chapel on a hill right next to this ruined Romanesque abbey. The abbey itself sits in a colorful setting of cypress trees, fields of sunflowers, and rolling green hills. Built sometime in the 13th century, the abbey is named after Galgano Guidotti, a knight who renounced his worldly life and became a hermit--after planting his sword into that legendary rock. Highly recommended. It is an very impressiv old building. And the way the sun shines through the antique windows simply amazed me. You do have to pay 4€ to get in but it is totally fine for the things you get to see. I would definitely go there again.

I love buildings with atmosphere. As there is no roof, the play of sun and shadow under the arcs was magical. A wedding just took place there, they will have beautiful photos.
