Explore underground Italy with a visit to Grotte di Castellana, a cave system of inestimable importance for the world’s natural heritage. These limestone caves, discovered in 1938, are the country’s longest natural subterranean network of passages. The caves teem with a huge variety of native wildlife, and contain an extraordinary range of underground landscapes, with some of the world’s most astonishing stalactite and stalagmite formations. Inside these caverns, natural light streams in through the ceiling, filtering down into the darkness and creating curious visual effects, which change according to the time of day and the season. Don’t miss the so-called "White Cave," which is often described as the most shining cave in the world because of the whiteness of its alabaster walls. Guided tours are available daily, but be sure to check the official website for exact times before you make the trip. • This is one of the most amazing set of caves in Europe (and maybe the world). The visit is well organised, with lots of explanations. There is also a lot of variety in the seeings, so you cannot be...  more »
  • WORST CAVE TOUR I HAD IN MY LIFE !!!!!!!! The 2 hour long tour lasted 1:20 !!! the two guides were not stopping in the kilometers long cave, just running like animals... you don’t have any single...  more »
  • The cave itself is truly remarkable. It would have been a 5/5 rate if not quite poor organization: it is too crowded, groups are simply too big - due to narrow corridors, every group need to move in a line and as a result, guide is so far away that no information is available for 3/4 of the group.
  • Marvellous caves but inhospitable staff and reception Make sure to be there at least 20 minutes before the time you would like to enter- the caves could only be visited with a guided tour, and the tours in languages other than Italian are only few times a day. We got there just 5 minutes before the scheduled entry time for a tour in English, the queue was very long and we got in by a total miracle. The people at the cash desk didn’t really speak English and were really bored to do their job to sell the tickets. After we got in, the guide was quite informative, but a bit coldly detached, kind of ‘listen up-follow up- get out- NEXT!’ attitude that made you feel that you aren’t welcome, but being treated like cattle. Caves were beautiful, but it’s hard to erase the way the staff treated you all along.
