Gunnuhver Hot Springs, Grindavik

4.5
#1 of 10 in Parks in Reykjanes Peninsula
Witness the unusual landscape of Iceland with its volcanic rock, boiling mud pools, and steam vents at Gunnuhver Hot Springs. The highly active geothermal area was named after the legend of an angry witch named Gunna, whose spirit was trapped in the hot springs by a local pastor 400 years ago. The ghost story and the strong sulfur vapor add to the eerie atmosphere of the place. See the largest mud pool in Iceland, 20 m (65 ft) in diameter, boiling vigorously along its rims. Follow the signs, and stick to the paths. Note that the smell of sulfur can be overwhelming. Amenities include a small rest area and limited toilet facilities. • So many hot and steaming vents are visible throughout the area. smells like sulfur but nice to look at  more »
  • Parking is free and small, there are bridges with handrails, no toilet, very cool in windy weather, stay time of 10-15 minutes

  • Very cool stop if ur in the area. Can feel the warmth of what's underground from a foot off the ground. Bubbling pots and a bursting vent make u feel off world
  • If you are planning on going to the blue lagoon, take a quick stop by here as it's quite close by. A great tale about this place and a little bit extreme with huge vapours rising from deep below. Do stick to the path though, as you would not want to fall through, and down into a big boiler
