International Maritime Museum reveals the history and future of shipping with a collection of artifacts, model ships, and maritime art. Look for a 3,000-year-old dugout found in the Elbe River. Don't miss the reproduction of Sir Ernest Shackleton's lifeboat from his trans-Antarctic expedition. The replica was used in 2000 by the German explorer Arved Fuchs when he retraced the route. Captain your own ship on a simulator. An audio guide is available for an additional fee. Although many people were complaining that the Maritime Museum it's just too big and boring, I had a great time there. It is true that you just cannot go through everything in one visit, but if you... more »
One of the best and most interesting museums I ever visited. The building is big but you can use lift and the museum is very well organized. Take a lift and start visiting from the last floor. Huge collection of ship models on every level. Nice collection of paintings. The building is interesting itself - the oldest warehouse of the warehouse district. Nice views from the windows. We spent about 2 hours there and visited all the floors. Perfect as a starting point of visiting the warehouse area or a place for a rainy day.
MUCH larger on the inside than it appears on the outside. I like that you can leave and return within the same day multiple times to eat, shop, relax, etc. I enjoyed looking at the medals of different navies, learning the science behind navigation and looking at some of the ancient maps. It’s beautiful.
