You can cross the Elbe river 24 m (80 ft) below the water's surface through Alter Elbtunnel. This subterranean tunnel, constructed in 1911, connects the city center of Hamburg with the dock and shipyard district of the south banks. Inside the tunnel, you can admire the collection of glazed ceramic motifs. Walk through to the south side of the river for impressive views of the cityscape and surrounding area. Pedestrians and bicyclists can use the tunnel 24 hours a day. Motor traffic is restricted to certain hours.   • The Alter Elbtunnel is a tunnel that goes under the Elbe in Hamburg. The tunnel is historic and can only be accessed on foot or by bike and ultimately leads to a great viewpoint of the city. As this.....  more »

  • For me its an amazing place. Historically important. But the best thing is the system to see how it was used for transportation. Please use the stairs instead of lift to explore. If you are more curious use the big elevators. Try to go out of the other side and enjoy the skyline.
  • This is an amazing piece of technology and history. Considering how old it is, it is very well kept. The other end of the tunnel is not so scenic as the port end, but it is worth taking a walk.
