The Orthodox David Gareja Monastery complex conceals hundreds of cells, churches, and monks' quarters, hollowed out in a rocky mountain verge. In this semi-desert setting you can see shepherds herding their flock and birds of prey hunting, while the monks pick wild herbs emerging from rocky pathways. Visit the monastery and its quarters, and climb a hill from which you can see both Georgia and Azerbaijan. Look for the tomb of St. David Garejeli, the Assyrian monk who founded the complex in the 6th century. The climate at this site can be harsh, so bring warm clothes and have enough food and water for lengthy walks. To find out how to plan a trip to Udabno, use our trip itinerary maker.

The day I went. Very bad traffic jam out of Tbilisi. End up can only have tow hours in David Gareja site. Also the tension with Azerbaijan, half of the complex not open for visit. With the limited... more »
Great experience and a must see on your Georgia trip. The monastery itself is nice and interesting. But what is really nice is the surrounding and the hike to the Georgia/Azebaidjan border. If you have a day left it's a real must do! (easy as day trip from Tbilisi or when you're going from Tbilisi to Sighnaghi)
Not much to see here with the border conflict on. Not worth the hours on horrible roads.
