World Heritage Site Uplistsiche Cave Town, meaning "the lord's fortress," offers a chance to visit an ancient, sacred site mentioned in early religious texts. Rock-cut structures from the early Iron Age through to the late Middle Ages make up these cave-like buildings that bring together pagan and Christian architectures. The complex was mostly abandoned by the 14th century when it was sacked by raiding Mongol forces. Some highlights of the town include a Hellenistic amphitheater and a church built upon the foundations of a sun god's temple.
