Once popular as a health resort during Imperial Russian and Soviet times, Gagra today attracts a small contingent of international visitors seeking ideal summer weather and its seaside promenade, which hugs the coastline of the Black Sea. The city is split into old town and new town, with the historical center offering tranquil walks in a park as well as 4th- and 5th-century ruins. New Gagra has emerged alive and bustling with seaside activity. Pay close attention to the marks left behind from the civil war between Georgian and Abkhazian groups from 1992 to 1993, in which Gagra was a main battlefield. The Battle of Gagra was one of the bloodiest in the war and resulted in horrendous ethnic cleansing of groups of Georgians in the region.
