Omaha Beach, Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer

#1 of 65 in Outdoors in Calvados
Battlefield · Beach
Overlooked by bluffs which rise to 46 m (150 ft) and command the beaches, Omaha Beach possesses naturally strong defensive positions. During World War II, the Germans skillfully fortified this area with concrete gun emplacements, anti-tank guns, and machine guns. Allied bombs left these largely undamaged, and since there was no cover on the sand, the tranquil strand became a killing field on D-Day, when the US 1st Infantry Division had the most difficult landing of the whole Allied assault. Omaha Beach is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , international travel planner Edition.

  • Quite an emotional place. I found the monument beautiful. Easy parking is a positive extra. Worth taking a strallby the beach if the weather is good  more »
  • As a World War II history aficionado, the visit was a great experience to see the place I had read so much about. Lots of history in a 5 mile stretch.  more »
