Tinganes, Torshavn

#1 of 68 in Things to do in Faroe Islands
Must see · Historic Walking Area · Tourist Spot
Walk among the charming turf-roofed cottages at Tinganes, the cradle of Viking parliamentary democracy. Around 900 CE, the first Viking parliament met here on the flat rocky promontory in between harbors. To this day, the building on the farthest point of the jetty serves as seat of the Faroese government. The tiny main street is lined by 17th-century houses built from a combination of timber and red-painted stone. The guards will provide some historical information if you ask them. • Was really good to see such a historic part of the city, and where the government is based. Very interesting, and such beautiful buildings. Such a contrast to what I’m used to back home.  more »
  • This is the old city of Torshavn - it's small, just a couple of streets , crisscrossing the hill. Houses are neatly restored.  more »
