Kirkjubour Cathedral, Kirkjubour

#3 of 22 in Historic Sites in Faroe Islands
Must see · Church · Tourist Spot
Hike up the hill to Kirkjubour Cathedral, reputedly the largest medieval building on the islands. The 1300 church lacks a roof, which is nothing new: in fact, the building was never completed. Still, poking around here will reveal lots of details about ancient architecture and construction. Pause to take in the views of the rest of the island, as well as other smaller islands nearby. • An amazing settlement at an amazing location. Small, rough, pittoresque -and rough again. As with most things Faroese. This place is definately worth a visit while in the islands.  more »
  • It is breathtaking to visit this small coastal village and to see the Old Church. At is also possible to hike over the mountain and return to Torshavn by bus.  more »
  • Definitely worth a visit! Went with a guide and he provided some wonderful background for the site.
  • Lovely cathedral. Boats hanging from the ceiling. Doors at the end of each pew plus the distinctive balcony stood out for me.
