Frederiksborg Castle
Head to Frederiksborg Castle to explore the lavish rooms and lush gardens of past Danish royalty, now transformed into the area's national history museum. The oldest parts of the castle were built by Frederick II in 1560, but the majority of what remains today was constructed by Christian IV in the early 1600s. Walk the grounds of the largest Renaissance palace in Scandinavia to see fountains, sculptures, hedges, and a variety of flowers and other foliage. The castle is in the middle of Palace Lake and stretches across three small islands. Check out the large Baroque chapel, the lavishly decorated rooms, the Great Hall and Throne Room, and the contemporary Danish art collection housed inside. A small cafe in the garden is an ideal place to sit down and grab a coffee while taking in great views of the palace. Plan your visit to Frederiksborg Castle and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Hillerod trip planner.

I've been to a few castles, but this is so much more. It's a museum with a prerecorded guided tour, in our case English. It was well done and there were docents spread throughout. We spent a little over 2 hours and only saw the lower part of the garden. The grounds are beautiful too. We rented a car for the drive from Copenhagen and that was fun, but don't give Google Maps an address, just put in the name of the castle. We used the Copenhagen Card for free admission.

We LOVED this place!! It’s amazing and filled with history, but the true joy of it is the adventure itself. Not only do you have the castle, but the grounds and lake are so gorgeous. Do yourself a favor and pack a picnic lunch to eat after you tour the castle. Note: you do not need to have a tour guide to go through the castle.
