Despite its small size, The Little Mermaid serves as one of the city's major symbols. Based on the well-known fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, this unimposing bronze mermaid is the work of sculptor Edvard Eriksen. Commissioned by Danish beer baron Carl Jacobsen in 1909, the artist modeled the mermaid's face after ballerina Ellen Price and the body after his wife's. The statue miraculously survived the destructive forces of World War II undamaged, becoming a kind of city mascot over the years. The little mermaid what a lot hype as being a must see place but it really isn’t much more than a tourist trap. I made the visit down in the cold of February hoping for something much for exciting than I got. The attraction is far from many other things but if you’re in the area I suppose might as well make the trip. The mermaid statue was much smaller than expected and there was a line of tourist to get a photograph with it. I think it’s a bit exaggerated in terms of how great it is and I wouldn’t go unless I’m seeing something else around, especially in the middle of winter.

It's a pretty good walk around here but the statue itself is really nothing special. We enjoyed it anyway, even in early January. The girl selling coffee was appreciated by many.
