Admire the impressive range of over 80,000 artworks at The AGO, Art Gallery of Ontario, one of the largest venues of its kind in North America. With a collection spanning the period between the 1st century CE and the present day, this architectural landmark (with a facade by noted architect Frank Gehry) houses First Nation carvings, Henry Moore sculptures, rare Quebecois religious items, and much more. Other highlights include permanent exhibits of European paintings by Tintoretto, Rubens, Rembrandt, Goya, Picasso, Rodin, Monet, Degas, Cezanne, and many other Baroque and Renaissance masters. It's difficult to see everything in a single day, but if you're on a tight schedule, you can get a good feel for the gallery by taking a short mini tour. The AGO Reviews
A load of group of seven / Emily Carr, the odd Picasso and Monet, a few Rodina’s....Under 17s are free. Great afternoon out. It would certainly be one of my first suggestions for a rainy/ snowy day.... more »
After a poor start - lack of staff (only a single person on the ticket desk 15 minutes after opening) & their crap IT system - caused a 20 minute wait with only 12 sets of people in front of us... more »
The entire AGO itself, literally and metaphorically, is a work of art devoted to the grand experience of experience itself, housing within it all manner of emotions waiting to be induced brought to life by minds of all corners of the globe and all moments of history. And I can say for certain it inspires young artists to continue to create for the future; I cannot tell you how many bright-eyed invested youths I see pull out their sketchbooks and notepads or just generally breathe in the majesty of whatever treasures they find in its walls; I know this because, beside all else, I am one of them. Thank you, AGO, for everything.
I visit the AGO whenever I’m looking to spend a quiet afternoon learning about different artists and their work. Centrally located in downtown Toronto it is a museum you must visit if you enjoy art and art history. You’ll get to witness a wide variety of art and artists on display here from Europe to local Canadian artists. The museum also holds various exhibits by different artists from time to time which are worth visiting. The architecture is beautiful. The AGO also boasts of a gift shop which has a wonderful collection of books and art prints for every age group. The AGO bistro is a great place to go and unwind after a day at the museum where you can get some pretty good food options. Now that they’ve made the yearly pass so cheap, it is totally worth getting a membership here if you live in Toronto.
