Bakong, Siem Reap

4.5
The first of the mountain temples of Angkor, Bakong sits as an archetype of Khmer religious architecture, dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. Built in 881 CE, the ancient sandstone remnant was once a grand house of worship in the Rolous group of temples. Encounter its historical significance with a walk around its expansive grounds, crossing two defence moats to the five-step pyramid, said to represent the sacred Mount Meru. Look to the north-east tower of the central sanctuary for some of the best-preserved Khmer architecture. You'll have to pay for admission at the archaeological park’s entrance. • It is not a large ruins like Angkor Wat, but there is a moat around the ruins, and if you go through the approach, you will see the tower in the center of the temple. There are many brick temples on the grounds of the temple, and beautiful sculptures are carved around the temple. If you go up to the center tower, you can see the view quite well, and you can see a number of statues and lion stone statues on the way up. A beautiful sculpture is carved around the center tower. There are no reliefs found in Angkor Wat or Bayon, but you can see many sculptures on the ruins. I visited at about 2 o'clock, but there were few tourists and I was able to see the ruins slowly.

  • Very nice temple! You will find much less visitors compared with the other temples in Angkor. Good vibes!
  • So worth the trip out to here for this temple complex. Also a nice cafe nearby Sister Cafe and Restaraunt
