Mosque of Bobo-Dioulasso, Bobo Dioulasso

#1 of 6 in Historic Sites in Burkina Faso
Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Workers used only local materials of mud and wood to build Mosque of Bobo-Dioulasso, which dates back to the 1880s and accounts for its unique structure. Part of an agreement of the Islamic leader Almamy Sidiki Sanou with the Syan king, the mosque stands as a token of tolerance and peace. The building needs to be reconstructed often as it is the center for the local Muslim community. View the Sudano-Sahelian architecture, which creates intricate rectangular pillars and a dark atmosphere inside; there you can find mosque guides with additional information. The building needs to be reconstructed often because of its age and the building materials used, plus the fact that it is the center of the local Muslim community so it gets heavy use.
