Simtokha Dzong, Thimphu

#2 of 9 in Historic Sites in Thimphu
See the birthplace of modern Bhutan at Simtokha Dzong, a three story mini-fortress perched on a ridge overlooking strategic Thimpu Valley. Built in 1629 by a lama who unified Bhutan, the building combines monastic and administrative use. With massive entry doors, high inward-sloping brick and stone walls with a red ochre stripe near the top, this is a typical dzong but also the oldest one which survived in its original form. Admire a large central figure of Sakyamuni flanked by eight bodhisattvas and the Chinese-style flared roof. You can watch the monks here or and observe a panorama with the city in the distance and a statue of golden Buddha. • Home of an incredible temple, where we had the opportunity to visit while monks were in class. I would have spent the whole day there watching if I could
  • It was a fortress, but now it's temple cum Monk's school. Many Monk practice the mantras here. You can visit and see the chanting.
