5 Fingers, Obertraun

5 Fingers is a free viewing platform in the Dachstein Mountains of Upper Austria, on Mount Krippenstein. It was named "5 Fingers" by virtue of its hand-like shape.
It has been called the "most spectacular viewing platform in the Alps." The individual fingers, which are approximately 4m long fingers, are built over a precipice of about 400m depth.
The viewing platform is less than a 20-minute walk from the Krippenstein Station of the Dachstein cable car line.
• On the first finger a metal frame has been mounted, so that visitors can take a framed photo of themselves as a souvenir.
• The second finger is equipped with a glass bottom which allows visitors to look down into the abyss below.
• The third finger is shorter than all others and is not accessible all the way. It has a springboard at the end, and symbolizes the freedom of the mountains.
• The fourth finger has a hole in the floor that allows a free view into the abyss.
• At the fifth finger a telescope is available free of charge.
The observation deck is illuminated at night until midnight. It can be easily seen with the bare eye as far away as the towns of Hallstatt and Obertraun.

  • I would definitely stay here again. It was so nice to be able to admire it. I had enough sneakers on the way, but it could be snowing until late fall and summer, so i'll have to pick a shoe.

  • The site is required to visit if you are in the area! The view is just crazy - on one side the glacier on Dachstein, on the other lake Halstetter with the town of Galstat, and between this whole beauty of the Alps. You feel like you're on the roof of the world. We were lucky with the weather in October. It was clear and 20, so that the jackets taken with them were not needed, despite the presence of a small amount of snow near the site. The cost of the lift up to the 2nd stage is 32 euros, but it is worth it, believe me. Along the entire route from the lift to the observation deck there are benches where you can enjoy the views of the mountains. There is a decent restaurant near the lift station. In total, we spent about 3.5 hours on the ascent, descent and platform.

  • The views are out of this world for the valley below. Be prepared to walk from the station for about 20 minutes . I went in winter and did a small snowshoe trail to reach the platform. A must when in hallstat.
  • The views from five fingers are unbeatable. However be prepared to walk once you get of the cable cars. There is also a small Cafe restaurant here and the once again the views are breath taking.
